Above is an early drawing of the concept car. The red line shows the the original outline of the Fiero body. Our desire was to make a body that would fit the Fiero chassis with out modification but had a modern concept car look. Also we did not want to make any custom glass and to retain as much of the windows operating mechanism as possible. The front window is original but at a lower angle. the rear window is made by cutting off the lower edge of the window. The door glass is original but not rolled up completely further the upper edge of the window is supported in a frame now. the front and rear quarter glass is made from flat glass As you can see the car looked great but when we went to put our 95% man in place we had head clearance problems. This was resolved by raising the roof line and inclining the seat slightly. but is shows the importance of using scaled drawings early in conceptual design of any product. Below is a couple of shots of a new prototyping technique we developed for use in constructing the car body. We call this technique panel warping. This can be used to create compound curves like you see on the top of the car. This was a lot of fun because from start to were you see the stage of completion only took 60 days. Presently looking for good running chassis with V6.
Wood formers attached to car. Roof completed and sides ready for application.
Panel warping complete with some foam build up. Fiberglass weave filled and ready for primer. |
